In his first summer transfer window as Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag has identified a new midfielder and striker as top targets. However, the Dutchman intends to strengthen a defense that played a role in United's worst defensive season in Premier League history.
Prior to the transfer market starting on June 10, the Red Devils have been associated with a number of fascinating targets, both from Ten Hag's past and from elsewhere. According to Express Sport, if he hits gold with his defensive targets, United's new-look defense may look like this.
Jurrien Timber (RB) (Ajax)
Since Ten Hag's arrival, Jurrien Timber has been linked with a move to Old Trafford more than any other player. Last season, the 20-year-old flourished under Ten Hag at Ajax and is now a regular starter for Louis van Gaal's Netherlands.
He is a natural centre-back who can also play right-back and might cost roughly £35 million to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka. His adaptability would be vital in the coming season, as he would be well-versed in United's expected style of play.
Matthijs de Ligt (CB) (Juventus)
This one is almost certainly doomed to fail. Matthijs de Ligt, on the other hand, is a former student of Ten Hag's, and his recent statements about his Juventus future have aroused widespread conjecture about whether he could join the ex-Ajax boss in Manchester.
De Ligt, who is still only 22, is a world-class defender who might be a key member of Ten Hag's club for the next decade. His contract at Turin, however, does not expire until 2024, and his release clause is thought to be in excess of £100 million. Raphael Varane or Harry Maguire are likely to start in central defense for the 2022-23 season.
Pau Torres (CB) (Villarreal)
Pau Torres is a major fan at United and was a top target before Varane became available last summer. Ten Hag is said to be looking for a left-sided centre-back to help balance out a disjointed defense, and the Spaniard is poised to leave Villarreal in the near future.
Torres, who is only 25, has already established his class at the highest level and has plenty more to contribute in the years ahead. He has one of the best passing abilities among center-backs in Europe, which makes him crucial to Ten Hag's style of play.
