According to the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, nations with economies superior to Ghana's did not hurry to build cathedrals.

This was done, according to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to guarantee a fair distribution of scarce resources.

As a result, the NDC legislator is baffled as to why the government plans to build the country's National Cathedral in four years.

As a result, Ghana was cynically referred to as a "super-rich" country by the previous Deputy Education Minister.

"Much wealthier economies took a longer time to build their flagship churches," he said on social media, "so other key industries do not suffer disproportionately."

Mr. Ablakwa had previously claimed that in 2021, the government released GH32 million to Sir David Adjaye & Associates Limited.

He argued that the money was for consulting services provided by Sir David Adjaye and his firm in connection with the building of the National Cathedral.

President Akufo-Addo, he claimed, has given his approval.  "Documents from the President's Office indicate that President Akufo-Addo authorized an incredible GHC32 million in public cash to be paid to Sir David Adjaye & Associates Ltd for consultation on his National Cathedral project in 2021 alone."

Mr. Ablakwa had previously tweeted, "GHS57million thus far; more to come."

Problems with the project recently

The project has been a source of contention in recent days, after the government's allocation of GHC25 million to the National Cathedral Secretariat as extra seed money for the project.  The revelation has caused a rift between the administration and the Minority Caucus in Parliament.

The administration claims that the release is not budgeted for, notwithstanding the Minority's claims.

The Minority claims it has no knowledge of the procurement procedures used in the disbursement of the cash.

The Deputy Finance Minister, on the other hand, accused the Minority of screaming wolf when there was none.
