Huawei, a leading global ICT company, has been recognized for helping to advance digitalisation in Ghana by providing mobile network coverage to certain unserved and underserved rural regions.
Huawei is a technical partner in the Rural Telephony Project, which aims to connect over four million Ghanaians in underserved and unserved communities in Ghana using Huawei's innovative RuralStar Solution, which was developed in collaboration with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) under the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation.
When a team led by the Ministry of Communications commissioned new RuralStar sites for the residents of Apenamedi Dantano and Anwiem villages in the Ahafo Region to offer them access to the mobile networks, they became the most recent beneficiaries of the programme.
The Communications and Digitalisation Minister, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful [Honourable], spoke to the Chiefs and people of Dantano and Anwiem in the Asunafo South District, highlighting the benefits of network connection and the need to enhance and strengthen infrastructure in that respect. "The project is important to our digital inclusion effort, and we can't wait for the telecom firms to do it on their own since it may not be as quick as we had hoped."
She also urged the locals to use their newly discovered link to improve their lives. "Beyond students utilizing it to better their education, take use of services like Mobile Money and eCommerce, among others, to explore new business options and grow your present company." She continued.
The Minister also praised Huawei for its work in co-developing the RuralStar Solution, which saves up to 60% on the cost of traditional cell sites, allowing the government and partners to deploy sites to more rural towns and close the connectivity gap.
The Ahafo Regional Minister also urged the people to embrace digitalization and make use of mobile connection to better their living conditions. He also praised Huawei and the project's partners for their contributions.
The Deputy Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Honourable Ama Pomaa Boateng [MP], toured the recently completed Rural Telephony project site at Apenamedi in the Asutifi South District Region as part of the Rural Sites commissioning marathon in the Ahafo Region.
During her visit, the Deputy Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring that everyone has access to the internet in order to enable the government's digital transformation initiative, which her ministry is leading. She also praised Huawei and the project's partners for their hard work and encouraged them to keep it up.
Mr. David Appiah, Huawei Ghana's Public Relations Manager, reaffirmed Huawei's commitment to the development of ICT infrastructure in Ghana in his remarks. "Huawei is committed to the development of ICT in Ghana, and we will continue to leverage our global expertise to complement the country's digitalisation efforts." "As an organization, we have a vision of bringing connectivity to every community, and our contributions to the RuralStar solution for the Rural Telephony Project is a testament to this," says the company. He continued,
Huawei continues to support digitalisation processes in Ghana by focusing on bridging the digital gap by connecting people and facilitating information access across economic, social, and geographic boundaries, ensuring that more people benefit from communications conveniences.
