OCCUPYGHANA REQUESTS INFORMATION ON ALL RELEASED PUBLIC LANDS FROM LANDS COMMISSION

OccupyGhana, a civil society organization, has asked the Lands Commission to give information on all public lands that have been distributed since the Fourth Republic took effect.

The request derives from the Group's exercise of its right to information under Article 21 of the Constitution, according to a letter sent to the Lands Commission on June 2.

"Several parcels of public lands have been liberated from government ownership or control since the Fourth Republican Constitution went into effect on January 7, 1993. Lands that the government has acquired by outright acquisitions, statutory vesting, forcible acquisition, or the constitutional freehold reversionary interest under Article 266 of the Constitution are among them.

"The circumstances behind the release of these lands are of interest to us." As a result, in exercising our right to information under Article 21 of the Constitution, we seek," the statement stated.

As a result, OccupyGhana is seeking that the Lands Commission reveal the following information:

1. A list of all public lands over which the government has ceded title or control, as well as the names of the people who have received such properties;

2. The sizes and locations of all such territories (suburbs, towns/cities, and regions);

3. The terms of the release, whether it's for free, for sale, for lease, or for a license;

4. The amount of rent paid or payable if the land was leased;

5. Any other funds paid to or received by the government for each transaction, if any; and

6. A copy of any current formal Ministerial policy guidance on these and other relevant subjects to the Lands Commission.

Last month, the group urged that the government halt the use of Executive Instrument (E.I) 144.

"We write to demand that you rescind or stop the operation of the Forests (Cessation of Forest Reserve) Instrument, 2022 (EI 144) and the Forests (Achimota Firewood Plantation Forest Reserve) (Amendment) Instrument, 2022 (EI 154) forthwith," the CSO said in a letter dated May 23, 2022.

"Instead, we demand a comprehensive public enquiry into the question of the Achimota Forest Reserve under Chapter 23 of the Constitution," OccupyGhana said.

"The goal of the inquiries would be to reverse any unlawful activities committed by government officials under the pretense of returning lands, as well as any inappropriate gains gained by government officials," the CSO added.
