Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), a renowned indigenous Ghanaian bank, announced today that it would collaborate with the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (G.A.A.S) Public Forum in 2022.

The three-day symposium, titled "The African Continental Free Trade Area- Obstacles and Chances," was organized by GAAS to provide an authoritative academic examination of the challenges and prospects of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), with a focus on its economic and legal implications.

The 2022 edition will feature notable speakers such as Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Prof. Appiagyei-Atua, UG, Mrs. Beatrice Chytor, AfCTA, and other academic giants.

AfCFTA is a trade agreement signed by 54 of the 55 African Union member nations that has resulted in the world's biggest free trade zone. This deal encompasses 1.2 billion Africans with a combined GDP of US$2.5 trillion, with the potential to boost intra-African trade by up to 52.3 percent. Ghana achieved a diplomatic coup on July 22, 2019, when the AfCTA Headquarters were established in Accra.

The GAAS, which was founded in 1959, is a learned organization dedicated to the development of knowledge in Ghana. Its public forums are intended to bridge the gap between the Academy and the general public by allowing them to discuss current challenges in society together.

"UMB was established as a policy bank by the State of Ghana in 1972," Nana Dwemoh Benneh, CEO of UMB, stated of the relationship. I'm willing to bet that it was these kinds of discussions that formed the intellectual groundwork for the founding of our Bank. As a result, we've always been interested in supporting fundamental research and thought leadership in Ghana, particularly in the fields of banking, finance, and economics. The Merchant Bank-ISSER Policy Dialogues in the early 2000s were part of a long series of thought leadership activities, including this sponsorship.

Madam Belinda Boamah, Executive Director -Strategy at the Bank, added to the CEO's reasons, saying, "Our sponsorship of the event is part of the celebrations to honor our 50th Anniversary."

We are looking forward to the next frontiers of growth for ourselves and the industry as we reach this milestone. These prospects are presented by AfCTA, and as an indigenous bank, we are keen to learn from professionals on a realistic road ahead in accessing new markets and maximizing potential. The issue of trans-African payments is an excellent example of this."

The GAAS Public Forum 2022 - https://gaas-gh.org/fellowship/public-forum/ - is set to take place from June 6th to June 8th, 2022.

Since 1972, UMB has been a renowned indigenous bank known for providing a distinctly Ghanaian viewpoint to banking. The bank is headquartered in Accra and is regulated by the Bank of Ghana. It has 35 locations around Ghana. Its strategy goal is to become a digital first company.
