Alexis Mac Allister of Brighton and Hove Albion is aiming to join Lionel Messi in the Argentina squad for the 2022 World Cup.
With the World Cup starting in Qatar in a few months, the Brighton midfielder has underlined his desire to keep his place in the national team.
Mac Aliister was a member of the Argentine team that defeated Estonia 5-0 in a friendly match on Sunday (5 June), with Messi scoring all five goals. In the 2014 World Cup, the Paris Saint-Germain forward was awarded the Golden Ball. Argentina, on the other hand, came up short in the final, losing 1-0 to Germany.
Mac Allister told Clarin.com (via The Argus) on his prospects of making the final cut:
"The player is constantly thinking about it because he wants to be there." However, Lionel Scaloni, the team's head coach, has been very clear. Apart from Leo (Messi), we're all competing for our spot, and we'll keep fighting until the end. I'm in the middle of a fantasy. We're getting near to the World Cup, and all I'm going to do now is keep working so that when that list comes out, I'll be there."
Argentina will be eager to participate.
Messi is expected to make his final World Cup appearance in Qatar. And Mac Allister is looking forward to assisting the legend in winning the prestigious trophy later this year.
Argentina has always had plenty of offensive talent. Their primary flaws are usually seen lower on the pitch.
Argentina appears to be a more well-rounded team this time around, with Emiliano Martinez in goal and Christian Romero at center-back providing greater solidity.
Mac Allister has also contributed to the team. By nature, he is a flexible midfielder who has represented his country as a deep-lying midfielder. When needed, he can also play as a No. 10 or on the left side.
When asked about his adaptability, he said:
"I've played in three midfield positions at Brighton, including as a false nine." Giving the squad and the coach alternatives is critical for a player. For me, this season was a step forward.
I've come a long way.
Argentina's aim of winning their first World Cup since 1986 will be aided by the presence of more players who want to be part of a collective unit and help the national team win.
