Real Madrid sign Aurelien Tchouameni: Robert Moreno explains why France's star can be one of the best midfielders in the world

Former Monaco and Spain head coach Robert Moreno explains what makes France international Aurelien Tchouameni such a special talent in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports as the midfielder prepares to join Real Madrid.

Real Madrid have completed a deal for Aurelien Tchouameni to wear white next season, and an official announcement is expected soon.

Los Blancos and Monaco have reached an agreement, and the midfielder will become the club's second signing ahead of the new season, following Antonio Rudiger.

Real Madrid have signed a new midfielder, and those who have followed his progress closely believe he has the potential to become one of the best in the world. Aurelien Tchouameni is that good.

Robert Moreno understands this better than most. He is the coach who assisted in bringing him to Monaco and now jokes that he wants a cut of the deal. "They're talking €80 million, so I'll be expecting a thank-you message," Moreno tells Sky Sports.

"He has developed into one of France's best midfielders."

"He's developed into the player we expected."

Moreno, the former Spain national team coach, will explain the insights and data that led to Tchouameni signing for Monaco, the qualities that set him apart, and the missteps along the way that the youngster soon learned from.

Tchouameni had already made his breakthrough at Bordeaux as a teenager. That is what drew Monaco's attention to him when they were looking for a new midfielder during the January transfer window in 2020. Moreno had recently been named as their new head coach.

"They didn't have a sporting director at the time," Moreno explains. With Michael Emenalo gone and Paul Mitchell still on the job, the club needed more input from the coach. "I told them it would be difficult to analyze the market, but I accepted the challenge."

Two areas for improvement were quickly identified, one of which was the center of midfield. Fabregas and Adrien Silva provided experience, but youth was also required. Tiemoue Bakayoko was only on loan from the team.

Beyond France, there was Tomas Soucek of Slavia Prague and Guido Rodriguez of America, who are now at West Ham and Real Betis, respectively. They identified Youssouf Fofana of Strasbourg and Tchouameni from the internal market. They were both signed.

"What I liked about Aurelien was that he had his own personal coach to assist him. This sends the message that he is eager to improve and become a major player. This was the first and most important thing for me." After that, I called him to talk about his feelings and his plans for the future, not just football. I got the impression that, despite being only 20 years old, he was intensely focused on becoming successful.

Do not be surprised if he develops that skill as well. "Tchouameni is a different player because he understands football." This becomes clear when you speak with him. There are those who simply play. Players who are unable to explain their actions. He is constantly analyzing what is going on and what is going to happen, which is why I believe he is one of the most talented. He is powerful but technical. He is an all-around player. I believe he will continue to improve. He could stay at Real Madrid for years and become one of the world's best midfielders for the next decade."
