The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has said that if the government does not begin paying their 20% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) by the end of June, they would go on strike.
Jacob Anaba, the Vice President of NAGRAT, addressed the media and listed a variety of reasons for their demand, including the country's present economic difficulty.
"We are providing notice to those who matter at this conference that their indifference to the Union's appeal to add COLA to the suffering Ghanaians workers has left us with no choice but to respond to the insensate demands of our members."
"As a result, we demand that the government award workers a 20 percent Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) by the end of June 2022 as soon as possible." Second, we demand that the national tripartite committee, which is required by law under Section 113 of the Labor Act of 2003, Act 6,5,1, decide the new minimum wage for the year 2003 by the middle of June 2022," he said.
It follows on the heels of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) asking a 20 percent COLA owing to the country's rising cost of living.
"Third, before June 30, 2022, the public sector joint bargaining committee must begin the process of determining base pay for the year 2023."
"If all of the requirements are not met by the end of July 2022, the leadership will have no choice but to announce a strike." As a result, as leaders, we bow to our members' requests for meaningful action, starting with the wearing of red bands by the end of June 2022 if the demands are not realized," the Vice President stated.
"We also direct all our regional and zonal secretariat to hang red flags in front of our offices with immediate effect," Mr. Anaba continued.
