Newborns need to start breathing before umbilical cord can be cut – Midwife.

Ruby Naa Ago Larbi Mensah Ansah-Tagoe, a senior midwifery officer at the Tema Health Centre, explained that newborn babies are stimulated to breathe before the umbilical cord is cut.

In an interview with Valerie N. Danso on the GTV Breakfast Show, the Midwife explained that when a woman misses her period, the placenta that houses the baby forms 4 weeks later.

"If you miss your period for more than four weeks, the placenta has already formed." From 7 to 8 weeks, the heart begins to beat (SIC). "The connection is formed when the placenta forms," she explained.

She also said that the umbilical cord develops 4 to 8 weeks after the placenta develops. The chord is crucial for transferring nutrients from the mother to the infant and connects the baby to the mother.

"We expect the umbilical cord to form within 4 to 8 weeks since it is the center, the connection for the baby to grow, and if the placenta does not form, the baby will not grow." The cord is the conduit through which all nutrients must pass to reach the infant. When the mother breaths, so does the baby. She pointed out that when a mother drinks water, her kid receives enough.

Before the umbilical cord is cut, babies are given to mothers and stimulated to breathe.

"Before we cut the cord, we anticipate the infant to breathe. We have things we do, we stimulate the baby,...we stimulate the back like that, this, you see the lungs are here and here, the more you stimulate, the more pressure is pushed to the lungs so that the kid may start breathing," she explained.
