Arsenal star Thomas Partey has changed his name, but the Gunners' shirt will remain the same.
Thomas Partey has changed his name, but Arsenal supporters who buy a replica of his shirt need not panic since the ex-Atletico Madrid star will not be changing anything about his shirt.Thomas Partey has changed his name, but the back of his Arsenal shirt will remain the same.
For his wife, Sara Bella, the Gunners linchpin has chosen to go by his Muslim name "Yakubu," although he will continue to be recognized in football by his common name. Partey, who was born a Christian in Ghana's eastern region, has confirmed his conversion to Islam now that he is back home."I have a female I love, and I know my side women are going to leave me, but that's no issue," the 28-year-old quipped in a video shared by famed Ghanaian journalist Nana Aba Anamoah, as reported by Pulse. "After all, I grew up with Muslims, so it's the same thing. My Muslim name is Yakubu, and I'm already married."In March, the former Atletico Madrid footballer was photographed with a Muslim priest, and he has long been linked to Moroccan brunette Sara Bella. Despite his pride in his faith, the Ghana vice-captain will continue to put the name 'Thomas' on the back of his shirt, reassuring fans who purchase a duplicate of his shirt.
Partey is an important piece in Mikel Arteta's team, which has lost 18 of the 32 games he has missed since joining Arsenal for £45 million two years ago. The ex-Mallorca and Almeria loanee was left out of his national team's squad for the current round of fixtures, which is troubling.Partey is still not fully fit, according to the Evening Standard, after suffering a hamstring injury in Arsenal's humiliating 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace on April 4. The absence of the combative midfielder contributed to Arsenal's catastrophic slip out of the top four over the final months of the season, handing arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur Champions League football next season.Arteta has been forced to confess that his team is overly reliant on Partey, implying that he and his coaching staff will need to devise new strategies to compensate for his frequent absences. "The data are there, and they are indisputable," the Gunners manager said near the end of the season.
Arteta is well aware that Arsenal is overly reliant on Partey."When Thomas is there, the win rate is higher. It's a problem for us since he hasn't been as present in the last two seasons as we would want. We need him to be able to perform that role on his own, with the talent and expertise he brings. And the fact that he provides us unique items that we want.
"Then we'll be able to accommodate players in other positions that are more important to them, and we'll be able to determine games in the way that we can." Otherwise, we'll have to think about and improve with the players we already have by using them differently, changing formations, and compensating."
