'I hope Zidane returns!' - French President Macron backs the legendary coach to lead PSG after influencing Mbappe's decision to stay.
Despite repeated rumors tying the former Real Madrid manager to Paris Saint-Germain, French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Zinedine Zidane to return to the country as a manager.
The future of Mauricio Pochettino, the capital club's manager, is apparently in danger after yet another year without a Champions League victory.
Macron, who was instrumental in enticing Kylian Mbappe to stay with the club, believes that in an ideal world, French legend Zinedine Zidane would return to his homeland to help PSG win European titles.
What did Macron have to say about Zinedine Zidane?
"I had the opportunity to speak with Kylian Mbappe, but he makes his decision in his heart," Macron said to RMC Sport. "He's demonstrated it; he's mature, and he's establishing his profession and commitment with a strong sense of accountability.
"I haven't met Zinedine Zidane, but I like him tremendously as a player and a coach. We truly want to have an athlete and coach of this caliber in the French championship who has been able to bring back three big cups for our clubs.
"I hope he returns to France and comes to coach a major French club; it would be fantastic for the French championship and for France. It is my responsibility to state that France is a fantastic sport and football nation, with large audiences who enjoy the sport. It is critical to us that the best [be present]."
Zidane's coaching experience
From 2016 to 2018, and then again from 2019 to 2021, the French icon led Real Madrid.
He also won La Liga twice and two Club World Cup medals, making him the first coach to win the Champions League three times in a row.
He has a total of 200 wins from 320 games in his career, with 57 of those victories coming while in charge of Real Madrid Castilla.
