Samuel Sarpong, a 23-year-old male, is being held by the Esiama Divisional Police Command in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region for allegedly scamming unsuspecting victims of large quantities of money.
Sarpong was detained on Thursday for allegedly scamming individuals in the employment application process.
Many victims, according to the authorities, have paid large quantities of money to the fraudster in the hopes of getting hired.
According to a police source, the suspect advertises jobs on Facebook under the identities Lawyer King and Esther Afia Abankwa to those who are desperate for work.
It was discovered that many women looking for work fell prey to his shady schemes.
According to the source, the culprit was apprehended on Sunday, June 5 after luring a lady from Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region to the Ellembelle region.
He duped the lady into thinking he would assist her in continuing her study.
She was also promised that she would be able to work for the suspect's firm.
The lady then traveled from Nkawkaw to the Western Region, only for the suspect to deceive her and flee with her money and belongings in her purse.
Samuel Sarpong pretended to be a taxi driver and approached the lady to pick her up. He eventually obtained the lady's mobile money pin number, which he used to withdraw around GH1000 from her account the night she arrived in town and fled.
The lady reported the incident to the police, who initiated a manhunt for the offender, who was eventually apprehended.
The claim was corroborated by ASP Kofi Darko, Divisional Police Commander in the region, who stated the police recovered certain goods on him, including a cellphone and voter identity cards, among other things.
He recommended young people, particularly women, to look for jobs in legitimate methods rather than relying on people they meet on social media.
