At the age of 39, Portugal defender Pepe demonstrated that he is still the maddest man in football by covering the entire Estadio de Alvalade surface in 10 seconds.

On Thursday evening, Fernando Santos' men welcomed the Czech Republic to Lisbon for their Nations League group B match.

Portugal won the game with to goals from Joao Cancelo and Goncalo Guedes in the first half, but the big talking point was Pepe's amazing athleticism.

After Raphael Guerreiro lost control just before the hour mark, the Czech Republic had a chance to reply.

Pepe, a Porto superstar, had come up for the attack but quickly realized he needed to return to his original position.

Guerreiro and William Carvalho, players 11 and 9 years his junior, trailed him, gasping and puffing.

While at Real Madrid, Pepe's incredible passion helped him become one of the best defenders of his generation.

Fans have reacted to the video online, and they're stunned at the speed on show.

One person stated: "He outperforms nearly all of his teammates... This is incredible!"

"This is what many players lack, the ability to run backwards," said another.

"Pepe is still one of the top center defenders in the world," said a third.

"He's built differently, a 39-year-old guy doing this..." someone else tweeted.

During a decade at the Santiago Bernabeu, Alamy Pepe made his reputation by winning three La Liga crowns and three Champions Leagues.

He was a combative but speedy defender who worked well with Sergio Ramos to form one of Europe's top defensive pairings.

Many believed his career was coming to an end when he left in 2017 and transferred to Besiktas. That was far from the case.

After receiving an offer from his previous club Porto, he returned to the club in 2019 after a 12-year absence.

Pepe has won two Primeira Liga crowns and two Taca de Portugals since rejoining Porto. He also got into a scuffle with the entire Atletico Madrid team and was sent off for his involvement in a clash with Sporting Lisbon. Things become more similar the more they change.

With 125 caps, he is the fourth most capped player in the history of the Portugal national team.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Moutinho, and Luis Figo have played more for the Selecao.

If he starts against Switzerland on Sunday, he will overtake Figo.

Pepe will be looking to make the World Cup in Qatar this winter and assist his country win their second big international trophy.
