Former President John Dramani Mahama has promised Ghanaians brighter times ahead and urged Ghanaians, particularly the young, to rise up and save the country from ruin with collective and patriotic energy.

"On this momentous 30th anniversary, June 10, 2022, I call on all NDC members and sympathizers, notably Ghana's young; and all Ghanaians to "Arise, arise for Ghana" wherever we are," the former President remarked.

In a message released to commemorate the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) 30th anniversary, the former President, who is now the party's Leader, said the country needs the collective and patriotic energy of all Ghanaians to save it from degradation.

"We've done it before, delivering concrete socioeconomic infrastructure to your towns and ensuring that the economy works for everyone, not just the wealthy." In a statement released to commemorate the party's 30th anniversary, Mr Mahama stated.

"To save Ghana from the current state of degradation, we need to pool our collective and patriotic energy."

He stated that the NDC was founded 30 years ago with the goal of bringing unity, stability, and development to all Ghanaians.  He added that the NDC emerged from the PNDC as the vanguard leading the nation in the construction of a new constitutional democracy that secured the rights and liberties of all Ghanaians, thanks to the leadership of former President Jerry John Rawlings and his formidable team.

"On this sad day, I honor our forefathers who gave everything to bring us here."

He stated that the NDC sincerely believes that the essence of democracy is to improve the lives of all citizens, and that "every time it has had the privilege of leading this country, the NDC has strived to create opportunities for all Ghanaians, regardless of ethnic, religious, or political affiliation."

He said that the NDC thought democracy went beyond benefiting family and friends since it entailed appropriately managing the country's resources to meet the needs of all Ghanaians.

Mqr Mahama stated that democracy, openness, and accountability were bedfellows, and that although leaders must create opportunity for all, they must also fight corruption.

He claimed that the NDC understood that a frightened media and a fearful public were insufficient resources for long-term prosperity and national development.

"As a result, we feel that people' freedom to freely express themselves is a right, not a luxury," Mr Mahama stated.  He asked the government to learn to tolerate criticism and to promote free speech while safeguarding journalists.
