Manchester United recently had an offer for Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong rejected by Barcelona for a fee of around €80 million.
Erik ten Hag, the new manager of Manchester United, is eager to reunite with a former Ajax player.
The recruitment of the Holland international midfielder is a top goal for Manchester United this summer, according to ten Hag.
Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes De Jong is worth more than the club's offer.
De Jong is worth €112 million, according to Van Gaal, who is presently the head coach of Holland.
The statement was delivered by Holland's head coach after his side's 2-1 Nations League victory over Wales, in which De Jong came off the bench as a substitute.
Van Gaal praised De Jong's efforts after coming on as a substitute during his post-match interview, and said Barcelona should hold out for a large cost this summer.
"Of course, Frenkie de Jong brings an extra quality," Van Gaal stated, according to the Daily Mail. "That's why he's worth €112 million as well.
Van Gaal reportedly pushed Ajax defender Jurrien Timber to reject a summer transfer to Manchester United.
Following his tumultuous leave in May 2016, Manchester United fans believe Van Gaal is attempting to undermine the club's transfer intentions this summer.
"The No. 7 curse may be dead, but the Van Gaal curse is alive and strong after the way United handled him," tweeted @ArionArmeniakos. This man will not stop until Manchester United is destroyed.
"Van Gaal subtly frustrates United ambitions," tweeted @kotbgtextacy. He first said that Timber would be foolish to move to United, and now he is attempting to raise De Jong's price. "The same man who informed Ten Hag he couldn't come.
