According to rumors, Liverpool insists that more work needs to be done before a medical can be arranged to declare Darwin Nunez their player. There were rumors that Nunez would be subjected to medical exams this weekend, but those rumors were quickly debunked. The Reds are keen to make the Benfica striker, who may cost up to £85 million, their summer blockbuster signing, but are also in talks to sell Sadio Mane, who has been linked with a move away from Anfield.
Nunez, a Uruguayan midfielder, has been identified as a straight substitute for Mane, who Bayern Munich wants to bring to Germany this summer. Bayern Munich has made two bids for the Senegal wide-man, the second of which was £23.5 million up front with a further £6.5 million in improbable bonus payments. Liverpool are looking for over £40 million for the Senegal wide-man.
Even if progress is being made, the Daily Mirror reports that Jurgen Klopp's side would wait until Mane's deal to the Bundesliga winners is completed before concluding talks to sign Nunez. Liverpool and Benfica have undertaken talks, with the player agreeing to personal terms on a five-year contract that fits into the club's salary structure.
Manchester United has 'confidence.' Tottenham has a Jesus replacement who would command a 'big transfer fee'. Frenkie de Jong will have a medical next week.
Chelsea are interested in two Manchester United transfer targets and are 'closing in' on Kounde.
Instead, they claim that further work needs to be done with both Bayern Munich and Benfica before Nunez can travel to England for physical fitness testing. Liverpool is still in talks with the Portuguese side on the deal's structure, including how much the add-ons will cost and when they will be triggered.
Despite interest from other clubs, especially Manchester United, Nunez is adamant on moving to Anfield and playing for Klopp. He is anticipated to be part of a front three that includes Luis Diaz, a former Porto player, and Mohamed Salah. Nunez scored both at home and away in the Champions League quarter-finals against Liverpool in April.
And Liverpool are prepared to offer a club-record transfer fee to get the prolific South American to Merseyside, with Klopp a big fan of the striker. With 26 goals last season, the 22-year-old was the top striker in Liga Portugal, and he also scored six times in the Champions League.
It is believed that he would be able to step in and immediately replace Mane, who scored 23 goals last season. Liverpool, on the other hand, thought Bayern's initial two bids for Mane were pitiful, and believe that keeping the player for another year – despite his desire to leave – would make more sense if Bayern do not improve their offer.
Bayern Munich is set to make a third revised bid to Liverpool. That's because talisman striker Robert Lewandowski has officially stated his desire to leave the Allianz Arena for Barcelona. Mane is seen as a player who has the potential to become the German giants' new star player.
