In order to improve their poor financial situation, the La Liga club may have to sell a number of players.

Frenkie de Jong may be on his way to Manchester United.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has made an important admission that could affect Manchester United's pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.According to recent reports, the midfielder is close to reuniting with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. According to the Manchester Evening News, De Jong was the new United manager's main goal this transfer window.

The fact that Barcelona is in financial trouble has aided his pursuit of the player. The Nou Camp club is reported to be €1 billion (£850 million) in debt, and could be forced to sell a number of high-profile players to meet La Liga's spending restrictions.Eduard Romeu, a senior Barcelona administrator, has indicated that £426 million (€500 million) is required to "rescue" the Spanish giants. It is thought to have opened the door for United to speak with De Jong, given the club is currently unable to sign free agents Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie.

Laporta has now admitted that the club may have to transfer key players in order to balance the budget. "If our economic situation dictates the sale of a significant player, we are ready for that," he told Barca TV.

This summer, Ten Hag is likely to bring in more than one midfielder, as well as a centre-back and an attacking reinforcement.
