The Netherlands drew 2-2 with Poland when Memphis Depay missed a stoppage-time penalty that would have capped a remarkable turnaround.
Despite leaving Robert Lewandowski on the bench for the entire Nations League Group A4 match, Matty Cash and Piotr Zielinski scored to put Poland in a dominant position.
However, Davy Klaassen equalized two minutes later, and Denzel Dumfries brought the Netherlands level within five minutes.
Cash's handball gave Depay a chance to score the game-winner from the penalty spot, but the Barcelona forward hit the crossbar, resulting in a draw.
When Cash scooped up the ball on the right flank and drilled his first international goal into the bottom-left corner with a beautiful finish, Poland seized the lead.
Netherlands recovered admirably, but were still two goals behind when Przemyslaw Frankowski set up Zielinski for a straightforward finish after a brilliant ball in behind by Krzysztof Piatek – though VAR was used to overturn an offside ruling in the build-up.
Klaassen swiftly cut the deficit when he volleyed Daley Blind's cross home, and Louis van Gaal's side were soon level when VAR allowed Dumfries' deflected attempt after the offside flag was initially raised.
After Lukasz Skorupski kept Depay at bay, Cash handled the ball, and referee Halil Umut Meler signaled to the spot after reviewing video of the incident.
Depay was unable to take advantage of the situation, as his header was again turned over by Skorupski, and the Netherlands were denied victory.
What does this imply? An opportunity squandered
The Netherlands lost a chance to advance further in the Nations League finals due to Depay's missed penalty.
With Belgium restricted to a 1-1 draw by Wales, Van Gaal's side would have led Group A4 by five points if Depay had converted his penalty kick.
Instead, their five-game winning streak over Poland came to an end.
The Netherlands' comeback in the second half was both rapid and unexpected. After Poland went up 2-0, Klaassen scored 135 seconds later, and Dumfries equalized 139 seconds later.
Depay's wait to equal Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's all-time scoring record for the Netherlands was extended after he became the first player to miss three penalties for the national team.
What comes next?
On Tuesday, the Netherlands will host Wales at De Kuip, while Poland will face Belgium in Warsaw.
