EXCLUSIVE: Robert Lewandowski has been heavily linked with a summer move to Barcelona, but Manchester United might now hijack the deal and capture the Polish striker.
Manchester United are interested in signing Robert Lewandowski.
In their pursuit of Robert Lewandowski, Manchester United is ready to take on Chelsea.
The prolific Polish striker, 33, wants out of Bayern Munich this summer, and his ultimate destination is a cheap transfer to Barcelona. However, United and Chelsea, who are both looking to shake up their respective offenses this summer, feel Lewandowski will not be granted his wish.
Even if they were willing to sell their hitman, Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich are seeking a cost of £40 million or more, which would be a huge problem for the cash-strapped Catalans.
Barcelona, according to Spanish football president Javier Tebas, have no prospect of securing a transaction worth that much without breaking La Liga's current financial laws.
Before they can arrange any inbound agreements, they need to clear the decks of pricey, surplus-to-requirement talent. That does not, however, imply that Lewandowski, 33, will continue in Munich for the final year of his contract.
In recent days, the deterioration in his relationship with the German champions has reached new lows, with a public slanging war with their head coach Julian Nagelsmann.
The damage appears to be irreversible, making Lewandowski's departure before August a foregone conclusion.
As a result, Bayern Munich continues to pursue Liverpool forward Sadio Mane as a world-class substitute. And it's for this reason that United has joined Chelsea in the Lewandowski chase.

Lewandowski, Robert
This summer, Robert Lewandowski has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona.
The Reds are kicking themselves for missing out on Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, who is likely to join arch rivals Liverpool.
It's doubtful if United will fare much better against Lewandowski, who has 344 goals in 374 appearances for Bayern.
United and their new manager Erik ten Hag are struggling in the transfer market without the attraction of Champions League football.
Chelsea won't be able to sign Lewandowski unless they offload £97.5 million club record signing Romelu Lukaku. That's proving difficult since Inter Milan, his former club, cannot afford to buy him back outright.

Bayern Munich's deal with Robert Lewandowski has one year left on it.
Lukaku, 29, will have to forego a significant portion of his £450,000-a-week Blues contract, as Inter wants him on a two-year loan with the option to buy the Stamford Bridge flop at the end of the time frame
This delay, along with Barcelona's ongoing financial difficulties, could allow United to pounce on Lewandowski's services.
Ironically, their desire to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona - for roughly £70 million - may be essential to the Spanish club raising the funds needed to sign the Bayern star.
