Have you heard from God that he wants a place to sleep? - Pratt deconstructs Akufo-National Addo's Cathedral.
Kwesi Pratt Jnr., a veteran journalist, has expressed reservations over the Akufo-Addo administration's decision to build the National Cathedral.
Prior to the 2016 elections, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made a promise to God that if he won, he would build a cathedral for him.
Following his election victory, the President endeavored to keep his promise and purchased a plot of land that previously housed Justices' sitting residences.
The dwellings were removed so that the cathedral could be built on the site.
Despite the government's assurances to Ghanaians that they would not be responsible for any financial responsibilities to the National Cathedral, the President has committed taxpayers' funds to the project.
On Friday, June 10, 2022, the Cathedral was discussed on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" program after lawmaker and former Forestry Commission employee Pastor Charles Owusu underlined its relevance.
Nothing, he added clearly, will prevent the government from finishing the project because, in his opinion, the Cathedral will serve many beneficial reasons for Ghana.
Kwesi Pratt, on the other hand, is adamantly opposed to those who support and encourage the President to build the Cathedral.
Mr. Pratt questioned why God would choose to dwell in the Cathedral at the expense of innocent Ghanaians who desperately need the money the government is pouring into it to enhance their living conditions.
He questioned why the President isn't spending his own money because it's a personal pledge to God, but he wants all Ghanaians to participate.
"Our President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has stated that he is running for office and has prayed to God. He has pleaded to his God that if he is granted victory, he will build a cathedral in His honor. It's a deal made by the President and his God. I wasn't there, and I'm not a part of it. I didn't make the President's God a promise. It is the President who has made a promise to his God, and if you have made a promise to your God, must you build for your God with our money?"
He also chastised religious leaders who made outlandish claims about how crucial it is for Ghana to have such a religious structure.
He inquired; "Have you heard from God that he wants a place to sleep? When did God tell you that he wants to sleep in a house?"
"When you speak, some of you, Pastors, desecrate the name of God. Some of you, Pastors, say things that make it seem as though you're ruining God's name... Ghana is a non-Christian country. That is something you must comprehend. Ghana is a democratic and secular country. It does not become involved in religious matters since it is a secular state "Mr. Pratt continued.
