As Steven Gerrard continues to reshape his squad, ASTON VILLA have released eight players.

Last November, the Liverpool great took over from Dean Smith and is gearing up for his first full season in command.

Newcastle have signed Matt Targett for a fee of £15 million.

Newcastle have signed Matt Targett for a fee of £15 million.

Following a successful loan spell at St James' Park, Matt Targett was sold to Newcastle for £15 million.

Eight players, including two former first-team regulars, will be released when their contracts expire later this month.

Ashley Young returned to Villa Park last year after a ten-year absence when he left for Manchester United.

However, the 36-year-old struggled to get regular starts under Gerrard and will be released.

Young made 25 appearances for Villa last season, adding to his 190 appearances during his first stay with the club.

Conor Hourihane, a longtime Villa Park favorite, is another player who has left the club.

Under Smith, the Irish international was a regular following Villa's return to the Premier League, but he fell out of favor during the 2020-21 season.

In January 2021, he was loaned to Swansea City before returning to Villa Park for pre-season last summer.

Hourihane was sent out on loan again, this time to Sheffield United, after being named an unused substitute for two Premier League matches last August.

The 31-year-old made 30 appearances for the Blades before losing on penalties in the Championship play-off semi-finals against Nottingham Forest.

The Villans have also released six young players.

Mungo Bridge has only played one senior game for Villa.

In January 2021, the 21-year-old defender played the entire 90 minutes for a young team that lost 4-1 to Liverpool in the FA Cup.

Akos Onodi, a Hungarian goalkeeper, was on the field that day and has since been released by Gerrard.

Dominic Revan, 21, captained Villa's first team against Liverpool and also appeared on the first team bench seven times.

The defender, who was born in West Bromwich, has been deemed surplus to requirements and will be released.Tristan Abldeen-Goodridge, Paul Appiah, and Finley Thorndike are among those who have been released.
