Billy Bingham, Northern Ireland's most successful football manager, has died at the age of 90.
The crafty Bingham, a renowned strategist, led the boys in green to World Cup finals in 1982 and 1986.
Northern Ireland was the last team to win the now-defunct British Championship, in 1984.
Bingham also played for Northern Ireland in the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden and coached Everton and the Greek national team.
Bingham's death was met with "deep grief" by the Irish Football Association.
"Billy has a special place in Northern Ireland's football hearts since he was a part of Peter Doherty's historic World Cup final tournaments, both as a player and as a manager."
Northern Ireland's football governing body said: "He managed Northern Ireland in the 1982 and 1986 finals after guiding the 1958 squad in Sweden."
Northern Ireland upset 1982 World Cup hosts Spain on a memorable Friday night in Valencia, when Gerry Armstrong scored the game-winning goal. The 1-0 victory in sweltering heat is still remembered as one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.
In a statement following Bingham's death, Armstrong called him "Northern Ireland's finest manager" and offered his "heartfelt sympathies" to his family.
"Who can forget the amazing moments Billy has left us," the former Northern Ireland striker continued.
Bingham's club career includes winning the English League title with Everton in 1963, and the Goodison Park club was "truly grieved" to learn of his death.
Bingham was known for making the most of the little resources at his disposal, despite the fact that the majority of Northern Ireland's players were playing in the English Premier League.
Bingham, the son of a shipyard owner, worked in sales before moving into management. Before arriving to England, he had been a successful footballer, starting with Irish League side Glentoran for a reputed £6 a week.
He was a wide offensive midfielder, or outside-right as the position was termed at the time.
As a 19-year-old prodigy, Bingham joined Sunderland in the First Division and made his international debut the following year.
