The contract of the Argentine coach has one year left on it, and he and his staff are entitled a pay-off of up to 20 million euros.
The time of Mauricio Pochettino in the French capital has come to an end.
Mauricio Pochettino has agreed to leave Paris Saint-Germain after reaching a deal with the club.
Pochettino was told at a meeting last week that he will be fired at the end of the season, as reported by Telegraph Sport in March.
The former Tottenham Hotspur manager and his staff – assistants Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino, Toni Jimenez, and Pochettino's son Sebastiano – were due a pay-off of up to 20 million euros under the terms of his contract, which had one year left to run, although PSG were hoping to negotiate a lower figure.
In truth, PSG had hoped that Pochettino would be named as Manchester United's new manager, saving them the cost of paying him off, but despite being their first option after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired last November, he was replaced by Erik ten Hag.
Pochettino’s days at PSG were numbered even before the Champions League exit, in the last-16, to Real Madrid and he irritated the club’s hierarchy by flirting with a return to Tottenham last summer. PSG responded by extending his contract for another year, but they believe he has struggled to settle in Paris, despite having played for the club and winning the French title.
Pochettino will argue that PSG’s set-up, which is being overhauled with the departure of sporting director Leonardo and with Luis Campos being appointed an as a football advisor, did not help. Ironically PSG agree with him that a clear-out of the underperforming squad is needed but he will not be a part of that and is likely to take some
He needed to take a breather before making his next move.
Pochettino is said to want to return to the Premier League and would have been a target for Spurs again if Antonio Conte had not elected to stay at the club.
PSG's first choice to succeed Pochettino is Zinedine Zidane, who has been a long-term target for the club, but his advisor Alain Migliaccio maintained last week that no deal had been reached. PSG explored signing Jose Mourinho, but he looks to have decided to stay with Roma, while Nice coach Christophe Galtier, who previously worked with Campos, is also being considered.
