MARCUS RASHFORD and Jadon Sancho have been warned they face World Cup heartbreak.
England manager Gareth Southgate revealed the two Manchester United stars now both face an uphill battle to reach the squad for Qatar.
Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford face a battle to reach the World Cup with England
Rashford and Sancho played for the Three Lions at Euro 2020 last summer but had a poor season at Old Trafford.
And Southgate said: “They’ve got a lot to do to get back in the squad.”
England face Hungary in the Nations League at Molineux tomorrow night and Harry Maguire is the only United player in the squad.
Left-back Luke Shaw missed out due to injury but he is set to go to the World Cup.
Three Lions boss Southgate has not closed the door on Rashford, 24, or Sancho, 22.
He will hope both enjoy a massive improvement in form under new United chief Erik ten Hag — but their hopes of making it to Qatar do not look good.
The last of Rashford’s 46 caps came when he missed a penalty in the Euro 2020 final shootout defeat to Italy.
Sancho — on 23 caps — has played just one game for England since the Wembley final, when he also missed a penalty.
Jesse Lingard, set to leave United on a free transfer, has also dropped out of the England reckoning despite playing eight times in 2021.
The England manager’s comments are a boost for West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, who has just broken into the international set-up.
Southgate will name his squad — likely to be expanded to 26 places by Fifa — shortly before the November 12-13 Premier League fixtures going into the World Cup break.
England fly to Qatar on November 15 ahead of the opening match against Iran on November 21.
