Following conflicts that left one person dead, heavy security has been deployed to Kutula, a village in the Savannah Region.
A gang of armed guys attacked the neighborhood and reportedly shot the deceased.
Two chiefs are said to be claiming ownership and leadership of the village, one in Daboya in the Savannah Region and the other in Janga in the North East Region.
According to reports in the region, the event occurred on Saturday, June 11, when armed individuals riding a motorcycle came to a halt in the Kutula settlement and began stealing cattle and other property belonging to the people.
Residents came out to prevent the armed guys from stealing their belongings, which culminated in a clash.
During this time, the armed men began shooting firearms, killing one individual who was insistent on reclaiming his goat, which had been kidnapped by the armed men.
The tragedy has left the entire area uneasy and unpredictable, according to Naa Seidu Nantogmah, the paramount chief of Janga.
"Security approached them and inquired, and they [residents] informed them of the situation. They [security officers] went to them [armed men] and returned empty-handed, claiming that they had not seen those who murdered him [the deceased].
"You'll call this a 'investigation,' yet you went to meet them with their weaponry, including an AK47 and others, while going through the entire town." They are not security or military personnel. They need to be arrested to show them that they can't take the law into their own hands and do what they're doing," he explained.
After taking control of the deceased victim, police officers from the Savannah Region were dispatched to patrol the area, according to the chief.
According to Soonaba, security personnel have failed to apprehend the individuals who are still in the neighborhood, threatening and tormenting the people with their weapons.
Traditional militias from Daboya in the Savannah Region have been identified as the armed men. Saeed Muhazu Jibril, the Savannah Regional Minister, told JoyNews that security officers on the ground will restore calm and avoid further escalation.
"As I speak, we've dispatched enough security to the area to keep the calm while also ensuring that the warriors are expelled."
The Kutula hamlet is one of roughly 40 settlements involved in a border dispute between the North East Region's traditional region and the Savannah Region's Wasipe.
Fighting between competing factions continues to erupt on a sporadic basis.
