Dr. Mensa Otabil, the founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), is said to have ceased attending National Cathedral Board of Trustees meetings.
According to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ranking Member of Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, this discovery has been made.
Mr Ablakwa, speaking on JoyNews' The Probe, claimed that the theologian's defection was due to the Akufo-Addo government's illegality in relation to the project.
"Among the Board of Trustees, there is an unsettling quiet. I can also report that one upcoming priest has left the Board; the esteemed Dr Mensa Otabil is no longer with them.
"He hasn't been to any of their meetings for the whole year." It's unclear what he's up to. On Sunday, June 12, he told presenter Emefa Apawu, "His aim was, but he has given signal that everything is not well."
The MP has accused the administration of siphoning public monies to accomplish a project it promoted as a personal and private vow over the last week.
So far, the North Tongu MP has released records indicating that a total of GHS 200 million has been spent on the project's construction.
He said that the funds were distributed without going through parliamentary procedures or adhering to rigorous public procurement guidelines.
He went on to say that include the Executive Director of the National Cathedral on the list of Presidential Staffers is likewise illegal.
"This person [Dr Paul Opoku Mensah], who has been named here as the Executive Director of the Secretariat, a Secretariat portrayed as a private business, has also been classified as a Presidential employee, and his job there is Overseer of the National Cathedral."
He questioned, "Why is the Ghanaian taxpayer supporting someone who works for a private board of trustees?"
The North Tongu MP has branded this, among other things, as unlawful and undesirable.
"It is unethical and in violation of our Public Financial Management Laws," he stated emphatically.
He went on to say that the secrecy surrounding the current endeavor is mind-boggling.
"The government's behavior is devoid of openness and humility, and it reaches new heights of illegality. I'm quite concerned.
