FDA sanctions Markwo restaurant
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has claimed that its investigation into the food poisoning incident at the Marwako restaurant has been impeded by the establishment's disposal of some of the food items.
The FDA, on the other hand, stated that the destruction of the food items only prevented it from pinpointing the root cause of the food poisoning, but that it was able to determine that the food the patients ate was highly contaminated based on the samples it took from them.
The authority announced in a statement that the closed Marwako locations will remain closed, and that the restaurant has been sanctioned.
"Unfortunately, the process of determining the underlying cause of the contamination has been impeded by Marwako management's unauthorised and unilateral decision to destroy some of the food items while the investigation was underway."
"Analysis of food samples, certain juice drinks, and items taken from the environment at Mawarko Fast Food Limited's East Legon branch revealed a high microbial load (pathogens) that could be linked to the food borne sickness reported." The Abelenkpe and La branches' samples were also determined to be significantly polluted.
"We want to reassure the public that all actions at Marwako Fast Foods Limited will be continuously monitored to ensure compliance with FDA guidelines and applicable regulatory standards." Catering services at the locations are still suspended," according to the FDA's statement.
The FDA shut down the Marwarko Restaurant's East Legon branch on Thursday, May 12, following social media claims of food poisoning by people who claimed to have eaten there.
As part of the ongoing investigations into the alleged food poisoning incident, the authority announced on May 13, 2022 that it had also shuttered the Abelemkpe branch, which was closed in partnership with the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly, and the La branch.
