Marwako scoffs at FDA findings and demands an independent investigation.
A total of 53 people are being treated for food poisoning.
The FDA is looking into a case of food poisoning.
Following FDA investigations, the Marwako branches have remained closed.
The Public Relations Officer for Marwako Fast Foods has disputed the Food and Drugs Authority's (FDA) devastating conclusions in the wake of reported food poisoning at some of the eatery's locations.
In a statement made on Monday, June 14, 2022, the FDA provided an update on their investigations into the incident, stating that the food poisoning was caused by poor sanitation, poor storage, and microbial infestation.
In an interview with JoyNews, the PRO of Marwako, Mohammed Amin Lamptey, responded to the findings by saying, "We can even say we would disagree with FDA to all intents and ends." We may require an independent examination into what they've done, and as I previously stated, everyone who understands the restaurant business knows that some things or components cannot be used the next day."
The FDA's measures, according to the PRO, appear to be "something that has been done to thoroughly harm the brand of Marwako Fast Food."
Following extensive accusations of food poisoning on social media, the FDA confirmed the closure of Marwako's East Legon branch on May 12, 2022.
"The FDA has received public reports concerning a possible case of food poisoning at Marwarko Restaurant's East Legon branch.
"We've shut down the eatery and launched an inquiry with other relevant agencies," the FDA said in a tweet.
"Analysis of samples of food, some juice drinks, and swaps taken from the environment at the East Legon branch of Mawarko Fast Food Limited indicate that there was heavy microbial load (pathogens) which may be linked to the food borne disease reported," the company said in a statement. "Samples collected from the Abelenkpe and La branches were also found to be contaminated." The FDA noted that "the levels of sanitation and hygiene in the food processing sections of all three plants were low."
"It was also discovered that there were improper storage practices," the Authority added. Deep freezers and refrigerators had temperatures that were much above the permissible ranges. The handling of ingredients used in cooking, as well as prepared and ready-to-eat food items, was also substandard."
