Bank customers who have not updated their records with the Ghana Card have fewer than 20 days to do so, otherwise they risk being unable to conduct any financial transactions through their accounts.

Some banks, notably Stanbic, have begun sending messages to their clients informing them of a directive from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) that, from July 1, the GhanaCard would be the only identity card accepted at all BoG licensed and regulated financial institutions.

Stanbic issued a message to a client who has not updated his records, pushing him to do so as soon as possible, saying, "In 20 days, you will not be allowed to execute transactions without your Ghana Card per the BoG."

"Please be notified that, as instructed by the BoG, from July 1, 2022, the Ghana Card shall be the sole identity card that will be accepted for all banking activities at CBG."

Banks, Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions, Non-Deposit-Taking Financial Institutions, Payment Service Providers and Dedicated Electronic Money Issuers, Forex Bureaus, and Credit Reference Bureaus are among the BoG institutions that will not accept customers who fail to update their information.

"In order to ensure the financial system's safety, the Bank of Ghana, in accordance with Regulation 7 of the National Identity Register, 2012 (L.I.2111), hereby directs that, with effect from July 1, 2022, the Ghana Card will be the only identification card that will be used to undertake any transaction."
