Between January and March of this year, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) penalized 115 people for violating sanitation bye-laws.

Dumping trash down drains, burning trash in residential areas, and having unsanitary drains in front of residential properties are among the offenses.

Others were charged for not registering with licensed garbage collectors, having overgrown weeds in their environs, not having domestic toilets, and defecating in the open.

Some people, mostly food sellers, were charged with not having cleanliness reports, not having a suitability, health and safety certificate, preparing and selling food in unsanitary circumstances, and not having food handlers certification.

Elizabeth Sackey, the AMA's Chief Executive, made the announcement following a working visit to Accra's core business sector.

She claimed 345 summonses were acquired from a sanitary court in La during the first quarter, with 304 of them successfully served as offenders.

"Twelve cases have been rescheduled, with nine bench warrants still pending. "In addition, 168 cases are still ongoing," she added.

Bye-laws

Mrs Sackey said that the prosecution was part of a larger effort to enforce bye-laws and keep the city clean.  She pointed out that failing to maintain the drains in front of one's property clean and providing a standard container for rubbish storage was a violation of the bye-laws.

Using the services of an unregistered solid or liquid waste contractor, discharging effluent into open drains, operating a public or commercial toilet without a valid permit, defecating in open drains, or dumping solid and liquid waste in open spaces, drains, or burning solid waste on one's compound were among the other offenses, she said.

Mrs Sackey reaffirmed the assembly's commitment to enforcing its bylaws in order to dissuade potential violators.

She also asked citizens to be environmentally conscious, noting that the Public Health Department will conduct routine household checks.  Ensure that the city was spotless.
