ENGLAND RATINGS: Aaron Ramsdale - 6: He was left vulnerable owing to a defensive shambles in front of him, however he could have done better with at least one of the goals. Apart than plucking the ball out of the goal four times, there wasn't much to do as Hungary easily dispatched England.

Kyle Walker - 4: Didn't provide enough width moving forward down the right side in the first half, so he shifted to the back three in the second, but he couldn't prevent Sallai from scoring again or Gazdag from making it four. Late in the game, he was booked for an evident foul. Reuters

Marc Guehi - 6: The Crystal Palace defender appeared more assured than his more experienced defensive partner Stones, and was not at fault for any of the goals, despite the fact that the backline as a whole crumbled at the end. EPA

John Stones - 3: Not the finest of performances from the Manchester City midfielder. Hungary's early goal came as a result of a lost header in the area, while the third goal came as a result of bad defending. On multiple instances, he was beaten to the ball, had terrible delivery, and was sent off late in the game — albeit the second yellow was a questionable judgement. Reuters

Reece James - 7: In the first half, he took over as right-back from Kieran Trippier and provided a superb cross to set up an early chance for Bowen. Hungary almost made it 2-0 with a headed opportunity that went wide. After a break, the formation was switched to the right and then back to the left. The best player in England, which isn't saying much. AP

Kalvin Phillips - 4: Turned off ahead of the first goal, giving Roland Sallai plenty of time and space to take a touch and score. On a day to forget, I was caught in possession ahead of second. The Leeds midfielder's performance, like that of many of his colleagues, was insufficient. EPA

Jude Bellingham - 5: The Dortmund midfielder missed a good chance in the first half and looked dangerous when moving forward, but that didn't happen nearly enough. AP

Bukayo Saka - 6: He and James worked nicely together in the first half, asking Hungary a lot of questions down the left side. Willi Orban was on the verge of heading into his own net after a quick run and cross. Following a magnificent feed from Kane, his first touch let him down in a good position after the interval. AP

Connor Gallagher - 6: Chelsea midfielder Connor Gallagher makes his first England debut. In the first half, his clipped cross reached Bellingham, but the teammate was unable to direct a header on target. He made a lot of noise, but not enough to push his way into Southgate's first-choice XI. AFP

Jarrod Bowen - 5: In the sixth minute, he misjudged a header from a James cross that was easily stopped. A handful of good counter-attacks were squandered, but one lung-bursting sprint back to reclaim the ball after losing possession on one of those occasions had the audience on its feet. At the break, I was hooked. AFP

Harry Kane - 6: A deflection in his own penalty area allowed the ball to reach Sallai's feet for Hungary's first goal. In the second half, there was one outstanding cross-field ball from the right wing to Saka. With the side behind 2-0, a looping header hits the bar. England's worries are growing: if Kane doesn't score, who will? Reuters

SUBS: Raheem Sterling (on for Bowen in the 46th minute) 6: Manchester City forward makes an early appearance, looking active but never challenging Hungary's goal. Reuters

Mason Mount 5: No effect on the game on England's terrible night. Reuters

(On for Bellingham 67') Phil Foden 6: From the edge of the box, dragged one shot wide of the goal. Reuters
