FORMER Angel Gomes, a Manchester United midfielder, has disclosed that he received a scathing dressing down from Jose Mourinho, which left him on the edge of tears.
The England Under-21 international spent 14 years at Old Trafford, rising through the ranks from the academy to the first team.
Angel Gomes has disclosed that as a kid at Manchester United, he was subjected to a public scolding by Jose Mourinho.
After one game as a teenager at United, Mourinho informed Gomes he was "f***ed" with him.
Mourinho gave Gomes his first-team debut in May 2017 when he was just 16 years old, replacing Wayne Rooney in United's 2-0 win against Crystal Palace.
It made him the club's youngest player since Duncan Edwards, but the now-Lille star admits things weren't always easy.
"I've never actually told this story before," Gomes, 21, told SPORTbible, "but one time, [Mourinho] took me to a cup game with the first squad after I'd played with the Under-21s."
We were sitting at the dinner table when he came around and started talking to everyone. 'I am f***ed with you,' he adds, looking at me.
He was laughing with everyone at the moment, so I assumed he was joking with me. When I inquired why, he mentioned my performance the day before. I'm sure he thought I was a jerk.
"I didn't believe I performed that poorly, but he's the boss, so if he thought I did, then I did."
"He was saying, 'You were doing this and doing that, but you should have done this and that,'" Gomes added, "and this was in front of the entire team."
I'd got my share of b*****kings, but never from the big boss. It was just something I hadn't expected. "I was astounded. " He soon stopped yelling and went back to what he was doing.
"I couldn't get out of my seat. Some of the lads eventually came over and said, 'Don't worry, just ignore him; he's just trying to generate a reaction from you.' This is his personality.'" I was still young, so I was thinking to myself, 'F***, he despises me.' I returned to my room and dialed my father's number. I was almost in tears."
Gomes went on to claim that five years later, he understands Mourinho is simply "passionate" and only wanted what was best for him, while also acknowledging that it was a tough introduction to senior football.
He asserted: "It finally dawned on me what kind of person he is... he is simply very, very passionate.
Mourinho is a man who always wants the best for his team, and I believe he was trying to convey to me that it wasn't going to be an easy ride. "I think I was too young to grasp him as a person when I first met him, but now that I'm older, I'd love to play under him again because he pulls the best out of his players."
