Do you remember Vincent Janssen? Mauricio Pochettino brought the Dutchman to Tottenham in 2016, but he struggled in the Premier League.
Pochettino, who signed him, sold him to Monterrey in 2019.
Janssen has done well since then to get his career back on track, earning a recall to the Netherlands squad and receiving accolades from Van der Vaart.
What is the backstory?
Well, the Tottenham legend stated Janssen has "done phenomenally well" since returning to the international stage, and he hailed the Dutchman for his performance in Wednesday night's 3-2 triumph over Wales.
According to FC Update, Van der Vaart stated, "I think he's done phenomenally well." He's most likely a megastar in Mexico, but we don't get it. That makes perfect sense. I am pleased with what he has demonstrated today. He keeps the ball, has good skill, and we know he can score."
Janssen, Tottenham
Janssen provided the assist for the opening goal, expertly setting up Noa Lang, before also contributing to Cody Gakpo's second goal.
Clearly, his stint in Monterrey helped him regain confidence, which Louis van Gaal and the Netherlands are currently reaping.
Janssen's move to Tottenham appears to have come at the wrong time, and the presence of someone as talented as Harry Kane in his position didn't help.
Tottenham must learn from Vincent Janssen's departure.
Tottenham should keep Janssen's troubles in mind when looking for fresh players in the Eredivisie, in our opinion.
We've already seen Steven Bergwijn struggle to make an impression in England after joining from PSV Eindhoven, and some reports say that Spurs are interested in signing Gakpo from the same club.
If that is the case, we believe the north Londoners should proceed with caution when visiting the Netherlands, as some of the country's top players can struggle to adjust in the Premier League.
