Players from Russia and Belarus will be allowed to compete in the 2022 US Open under a neutral flag

 

 

 

 

Players from Russia and Belarus will be permitted to contend in the 2022 US Open under a nonpartisan banner, the US Tennis Association reported on Tuesday.

 

"The USTA will permit every qualified player, regardless of identity, to contend at the 2022 US Open," the association said in a statement.

 

The move comes after the ATP and WTA stripped Wimbledon of positioning points after the grass-court Grand Slam competition restricted Russian and Belarusians.

 

Ukrainian previous player Sergiy Stakhovsky promptly denounced the US Open decision.

 

"You can't put a sticker price on having the option to live with yourself," tweeted Stakhovsky, who resigned from tennis recently and has joined Ukraine's reserve forces in Kyiv.

 

"I salute Wimbledon, the main element which has an ethical code."

 

The International Tennis Federation, the ATP and WTA Tours have all denounced the Russian invasion of Ukraine, supported by Belarus.

 

They restricted the countries from worldwide group competitions and issued directives that players from those nations contend under a nonpartisan banner in different competitions.

 

"The USTA will work with the players and the two tours to use the US Open as a stage to additional the helpful exertion of the 'Tennis Plays for Peace' program."

 

The USTA also said it would acquaint initiatives with assistance progressing Ukrainian philanthropic efforts.

 

"Sadly, the requirement for assist just continues with developing," said USTA president Mike McNulty.

 

"The USTA will answer very soon with an expansive set of initiatives that will incorporate significant monetary assistance and different programs to additional support philanthropic help and individuals of Ukraine."

 

Wimbledon's boycott has precluded a swathe of top players, including Daniil Medvedev, the men's reality No 1 and the dominant US Open boss, as well as last year's ladies' US Open semifinalist Aryna Sabalenka and double cross significant champ Victoria Azarenka.

 

They will be qualified to show up at the US Open.
