On Wednesday evening, Real Madrid President Florentino Perez met down with Spanish program El Chiringuito and swore not to dodge a single question. To his credit, he responded to everything that was hurled at him.

Naturally, Kylian Mbappe was the main topic of discussion. The year's biggest transfer story took an unexpected turn when the French attacker decided to stay at PSG rather than join Real Madrid. It was a decision that generated widespread disquiet in Madrid's footballing community.

According to Sport, Perez's first query on the subject was whether Mbappe had betrayed him.

"He didn't turn on me. He expressed his desire to play for Real Madrid. And it is correct. PSG refused to sell in August of last year. We waited a year, and he said the same thing every time. Because of political and economic pressures, the situation shifted fifteen days prior."

"He did what he felt was the simplest thing to do." He shifted. It's not necessary to go over it again. As a result of the pressure he was under, he decided to alter his dreams... He's really young; pressure affects us all, but young people are particularly vulnerable. The fact that the President of the Republic [Emmanuel Macron] was calling him made no sense... This had a significant impact on him."

That call came from French President Emmanuel Macron, who verified it. There was no doubt some pressure on Mbappe, and the cash offer would have been substantial, but Perez seemed unwilling to believe that Mbappe would have opted to stay in his own country at this juncture of his career.

Perez went on to say that Mbappe in that state was not one he wanted, but he didn't rule out the possibility of signing him later.

"The Mbappe I wanted was the one who fantasized of playing for Real Madrid."

"Three years to sign him?" I'm not sure... We could all go bald in three years [anything can happen]."

"This Mbappe, this Mbappe, this Mbappe, this Mbappe, this Mbappe is not Mbapp I'm not interested in a player who refuses to sponsor his national team. I assumed he'd had a dream, but dreams don't always come true due to unforeseen circumstances."
