Jurrien Timber, according to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, is getting closer to staying at Ajax next season rather than joining Manchester United.
Erik ten Hag, the new Manchester United manager, wanted to reunite with his former Ajax player at the club, but the Dutch international centre-back had reservations about joining Manchester United.
Following his appearances for Holland in UEFA Nations League games at the end of the season, Timber is due to go on holiday, where he will consider his future amid strong interest from Manchester United.
The Ajax defender hasn't made up his mind about his future, but he now has a good chance of staying at the club for at least another season because he isn't interested in making the high-profile move.
Ten Hag may have to explore at other choices in his shortlist now that Timber is hesitant to join Manchester United this summer.
With the World Cup in Qatar just months away, Timber is said to be anxious about joining Manchester United.
Timber recently stated that he will only quit Ajax if he is assured regular playing time in the months leading up to the World Cup.
Jurrien Timber said when asked if he'll stay at Ajax next season despite reports linking him with a move to Man United, "Of course I can develop further at Ajax." I'm certain of it; I don't feel like I'm finished at the club.
"I can progress at other clubs as well." Now I'm concentrating on the upcoming international matches before going on vacation, after which I'll have to think about it again.
"In the end, it will come down to my gut instinct." The image must be accurate. You don't have to go to a big club if you don't want to.
The centre-back is concerned that joining Manchester United might compromise his chances of making the Dutch World Cup squad.
Donny van de Beek, who was a regular for Ajax and the Netherlands national side before joining Manchester United, has battled to earn game time since joining the Red Devils.
Van van Beek's lack of playing time at Manchester United has cost him his spot in the Netherlands national team.
If Timber is unable to secure a regular role at United after joining the Red Devils, he believes he will be disregarded by Holland boss Louis van Gaal.
Timber has also been cautioned not to join Manchester United this summer by Holland's head coach, Louis van Gaal.
Van Gaal stated, "I believe a player with his [Timber's] qualities can play in the Premier League.
"That isn't an issue. But, if he needs to take this step right now, that's a different story.
"I don't think it's a good idea [to move to United]." He has to participate."
