Barça close to Gavi renewal agreement after latest De la Peña meeting

16/06/2022 Upd. at 13:09 CEST The midfielder's agent met with sporting director Alemany on Thursday A contract extension is now thought to be just a matter of time Barcelona sporting director Mateu Alemany met again with Gavi's agent Ivan de la Peña at the club's training ground on Thursday. The meeting lasted for an hour and the feelings afterward were good on both sides. The agreement to renew Gavi's contract is still not finalised, but it's now almost a given that he will remain at Camp Nou given recent advances. The two parties were a long way apart when negotiations started and Joan Laporta's comments to put pressure on De la Peña did not go down well with the agent. However, that has been overcome and recent contact has been positive. The new offer from Barça is close to what De la Peña wants. NEW CONTRACT The idea is to thrash out the final few discrepancies in the coming days and to announce that Gavi, 17, will extend his current terms, which expire in 2023 and include a €50m release clause. Gavi will sign a new four-year deal with a €1 billion release clause. His wages will be similar to defender Ronald Araujo, who also renewed recently.

Barcelona hope Gavi contract renewal can be agreed on Thursday

15/06/2022 Upd. at 16:33 CEST Barcelona president Joan Laporta explained last week that the club and Gavi were close to agreeing on a new deal for the young midfielder, who currently has a year left on his contract. Both sides have come closer together after starting off with very different ideas about his salary are expected to meet on Thursday to more or less seal the deal. Mateu Alemany’s sports department think that it could be the final meeting needed to sign Gavi on again, to a five-year deal, although that is still to be confirmed. His release clause will leap from 50m euros to 1 billion. The player will join Ronald Araujo on a similar salary grade. Signing Gavi on has been a priority for Barcelona in recent weeks and he’s become key for club and country. Liverpool and Man City had shown interest in signing the midfielder.

Barcelona ‘optimistic’ about reaching contract agreement with midfield sensation

Gavi has attracted quite a lot of headlines in the Spanish media this month following a lengthened renewal saga that has seen the youngster being linked with a move away from Camp Nou. Regarded as one of the most gifted young players in Europe, Gavi’s current deal expires at the end of next season. Barcelona are keen on extending his contract, in order to seal his long-term future in Catalonia. But the two parties have been locked in negotiations for months without reaching an agreement. It has led to widespread speculation, with both Liverpool and Manchester City reportedly on high alert. Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has recently chimed in on the saga, offering a rather hopeful update on Barcelona’s attempts to renew with Gavi. It appears the Catalans are “really optimistic” about their chances of reaching an agreement with Gavi despite months of fruitless negotiations. They have scheduled a new meeting with the player’s agent Ivan de la Pena, where they will discuss the terms of the new deal. They want to offer the youngster a five-year contract, with the player himself reportedly keen on continuing his progress under Xavi Hernandez. Barcelona also intend to increase Gavi’s current release clause from €50 million to €1 billion, thus keeping him in league with other key young players such as Ronald Araujo, Pedri and Ansu Fati. Barça have appeared apprehensive about handing Gavi a similar wage packet as the three other youngsters, primarily due to the fact that he is only 17 and has a long way to go before he can establish himself as a key member of Xavi’s unit. But the club remain hopeful they can reach an agreement with the player, who has a close connection with the club and head coach Xavi.
