The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has declared an amnesty for all consumers in its operating area who have electrical meter issues.

Customers who have uncaptured meters, billing irregularities, defective meters, meter bypassing, or meter tampering should visit any of the utility's customer care centers, according to the business.

ECG's Director of Customer Services, Abraham Anokye Abebrese, said the company's "unacceptable" losses prompted the decision to perform the exercise for the first time.

"Over the years, the Electricity Company of Ghana's largest challenge has been our losses, which have harmed the company's viability." Losses are unavoidable in the electrical distribution industry all around the world. It's the size of the losses that matters.

Customers have one month from June 7 to July 6, 2022 to make the necessary changes.

The activity is part of a larger attempt to clean up the electrical infrastructure and decrease the utility company's economic losses.

"We have for the first time in our history introduced a moratorium or an amnesty for customers prior to the auditing of all meters," said Mr. Abebrese, "in order to reduce our commercial losses once and for all, clean the system of any electrical illegalities, and improve the revenue of the company."

Power theft, he said, has been a big contribution to the losses throughout the years. This has an impact on the company's operations.

"Electricity losses are divided into two categories: technical and commercial losses. Commercial losses due by uncaptured meters, billing irregularities, malfunctioning meters, meter bypassing, and meter manipulation are areas where we have a lot of control. "However, power theft continues to be a major contributor to our business losses," he said.

"Consumers who use post-paid meters but do not get bills; customers who use prepaid meters but do not purchase power credit," Mr. Abebrese said to the journalists at the company's Ashanti SBU. Meters that aren't working for customers. Customers who have bypassed or tampered with their meters and are thus not paying the full cost of electricity use, as well as any other customer who is involved in any unlawful activity, will be offered a refund.
