The crazy story of Jurgen Klopp celebrating Dortmund’s 2011 title win will never be beaten
Today is Jurgen Klopp’s birthday. The fun-loving, charismatic Liverpool manager is everyone’s favourite football personality. Well, unless you happen to be from Manchester… But even then, you would be hard pressed to find any fan that detests Klopp. He is simply too likeable. So, given it’s his birthday, we thought we would rewind the tape to his Borussia Dortmund days and remember what is probably the funniest Klopp story to date. Dortmund clinch the title, Klopp has a mental night Klopp won the very first trophy of his managerial career at Dortmund after he guided the club to their first Bundesliga title in nine seasons. It was obviously an enormous moment for him personally and he hilariously revealed that he celebrated so hard on the night, he woke up on a random truck with absolutely no memory of what had gone on in the hours previous. Speaking in an Amazon Prime documentary about Dortmund two years ago, per The Daily Mail, Klopp said: “I was really wasted which may have been noticeable in some interviews. “And I don’t remember much that makes any sense. I do remember one thing. “I’m not sure if I ever told anyone. I actually woke up on a truck in the garage. All alone. I remember that, but I have no idea about the hours before that. “I woke up, climbed out of the truck and found myself in a big factory hall. Then I walked across the yard and saw the silhouette of a man. “So I whistled because I can whistle quite loudly and I noticed the silhouette slowed down a little. So I waited and saw Aki Watzke (Hans-Joachim Watzke, Borussia Dortmund CEO). So Aki and I were the only people on this huge yard.” Neither of the pair had the faintest clue where they were were and so were forced to try and hitch-hike their way back into the City. It already sounds like a scene out of Grand Theft Auto, but it gets better… Arsenal BID 30m for Jesus! Kounde to Chelsea DONE DEAL or OFF! “Aki held up an old Mercedes on the road,” Klopp continued. “It was a Turkish fellow in a station wagon. And Aki says ‘Take us to the Italian’. ‘No I won’t drive you there’. So Aki reaches into his pocket, finds 200 euros and says ‘You will.’ He sees the money, ‘OK’. “Aki sits in the front, I sit back. I kept slamming my head into the side, I was a little tired. And I kept hearing ‘cluck, cluck, cluck’.” “What’s going on here? I thought I dreamed it. But I didn’t. The trunk was full of chickens.” © Provided by Give Me Sport Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund I mean, we’ve all had some heavy nights but this has got to be right up there with the best! A hungover Klopp wakes up on a random truck with no memory of what’s gone on, is forced to hitch-hike his way to an Italian restaurant to continue the party, all whilst being surrounded by chickens?! You’ve got to love it. And it’s just another fine example of why Klopp is universally loved everywhere he goes. A true man of the people. Happy Birthday, Jurgen. Have one on us.
