FLOODS, HEAVY WINDS HIT ACCRA AGAIN

Seven hours of rain showed the fundamental flaws in Accra's technical architecture, as several areas were inundated.

Apart from the normal flood-prone locations, this time severe winds also pulled down trees planted along several of the city's main roadways, causing significant vehicle gridlock, particularly during the evening rush hours.

The rain began at 9 a.m. and lasted throughout the day.

Aftermath

Timothy Ngnenbe, Delali Sika, Elizabeth Konadu-Boakye, and Yaa Kuffour Senyah of the Daily Graphic traveled around to examine the situation and found that other locations in the city had been touched, such as certain sites in Osu, the traffic signal intersection at the National Theatre, and other areas.

All were affected, such as the Accra City Hotel portion of the Barnes Road.

The recognized flood-prone districts of Adabraka, Alajo, Abossey Okai, the Graphic Road, Agbogbloshie, Kaneshie-Odorkor, Circle, Awudome, Darkuman, and Dansoman had just recovered from a similar severe downpour last week and had to deal with flooded roads and complexes once more.

The deluge also wreaked havoc on Kantamanto and the Tema Station commercial district, rendering the region inaccessible.

The High Street in Atta Mills was also impacted.

The crew that was monitoring the situation in Accra's Central Business District shortly before the evening rush hour, when people were leaving their workplaces for home, saw that several trees had fallen onto the road.

As a result of the rain, the streets are flooded.

Trees that have fallen

When the Daily Graphic crew arrived at the Barnes Road location where the trees had fallen about 6 p.m., they saw employees from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) cutting the broken trees into pieces and taking them away in a vehicle.

More

Because sections of the roofs of certain Tema Community 8 primary schools leaked, buckets were placed in the classrooms to collect water.

The students were required to sweep rainwater out of their classrooms and verandas.

Gridlock

The intensity of the floods produced congestion on the Accra-Kasoa Road's Kaneshie-Odorkor segment, leaving road users powerless.

Passengers were forced to evacuate and walk when several commercial cars were stranded in the floodwater.   As cars desperately sought to make their way via the Awudome route, there was comparable vehicular jam along the STC section of the Obetsebi-Lamptey Interchange-Kwame Nkrumah Interchange Road.

The Daily Graphic noticed that most vendors in the Kaneshie Market area, particularly those who dealt in open spaces, had closed up shop for the day.

Floodwater was also witnessed inundating the premises of various companies, including petrol stations.

Accra to Tesano

The roads were flooded from Tesano to Accra, making it impossible for automobiles to get through. The majority of people were spotted fleeing for cover at adjacent gas stations and buildings.
