Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to come together with patriotic and communal energy to save the country from deterioration.
"On this momentous 30th anniversary, June 10, 2022, I call on all members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and sympathizers, particularly Ghana's young; and all Ghanaians to "Arise, arise for Ghana" wherever we are," the former President remarked.
He stated that the country required all Ghanaians' collective and patriotic endeavors to save it from deterioration. This was said in a message he released to commemorate the NDC's 30th anniversary.
Mr. Mahama is now residing outside of Ghana.
Commitment
"We've done it before, providing concrete socioeconomic infrastructure to your towns and guaranteeing that the economy works for everyone."
"All of us, not just a select few." Mr. Mahama stated his position.
"To save Ghana from the current state of degradation, we need to pool our collective and patriotic energy."
He stated that the NDC was founded 30 years ago with the goal of bringing unity, stability, and growth to all Ghanaians.
He noted that the NDC emerged from the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) as the vanguard leading the nation in the establishment of a new constitutional democracy that guaranteed the rights and freedoms of all Ghanaians, thanks to the leadership of late President Jerry John Rawlings and his formidable team.
"On this sad day, I honor our forefathers who gave everything to bring us here."
Democracy
"This is why, every time the NDC has had the luxury of ruling this nation, the NDC works to offer opportunities for all Ghanaians, irrespective of ethnic, religious, or political affiliation," he stated.
He said that the NDC thought that democracy went beyond benefiting family and friends since it entailed appropriately managing the country's resources to meet the needs of all Ghanaians.
Mr Mahama stated that democracy, openness, and accountability were bedfellows, and that although leaders must create opportunity for everybody, they must also fight corruption.
He claimed that the NDC understood that a frightened media and an intimidated public were insufficient resources for long-term prosperity and national development.
"As a result, we feel that people' freedom to freely express themselves is a right, not a luxury," Mr Mahama stated.
He asked the administration to learn to tolerate criticism and to promote free speech while safeguarding journalists.
