Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, a governance lecturer at Central University, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to fire his Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo, who is now on leave.
Sarah Adwoa Safo, a lawyer who also serves as a Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, has been in the United States for over a year and appears to have no intentions to return anytime soon.
She has neglected to carry out her legislative and ministerial obligations because she is caring for her kid, who is suffering from health problems.
As a result, the Parliamentary Privileges Committee has officially called lawyer Adwoa Safo to appear before the Committee on July 6, 2022.
According to a press statement issued by the Parliamentary Service and signed by Kate Addo, the Dome-Kwabenya MP and interim Minister has ignored all invitations to come before the Committee following the Speaker's direction.
"The summons from part of the Committee's work, referred to by the Speaker, Rt. Hon Alban Bagbin, pursuant to Article 97(1)(C) of the Constitution and Orders 15 and 16(1) of the Standing Orders of Parliament, for consideration and report to the House, on the absence of the Member from Parliament for more than fifteen sittings, without permission in writing from the Speaker during the First Meeting of the Second Session of the Eight Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, for consideration and report to
"The Committee has used all available official and unofficial means to serve the Member with an invitation letter," according to the statement, "including sending the invitation letter to her office and pigeonhole in Parliament, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, where she superintended as the Sector Minister, her official email addresses, known social media handles, and through her Personal Assistant."
Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" Thursday morning, questioned why Adwoa Safo is still in her job despite her absence.
He inquired as to why the President had taken no action against her.
He said, "Is Adwoa the only person who can be a Minister?"
To him, it's past time the President slapped her across the face for ignoring her duties to the state and her citizens.
"This does not sit well with me. She should be removed from her post as Minister by the President... Her place in Parliament should be taken away from her as well, so that the Dome people are properly represented... As a result, she has been paid during her absence of one year. Is this typical? Is it reasonable? ", Dr. Otchere-Ankrah said angrily.
