Alessandro Antonello, managing director of the Nerazzurri, claims that Romelu Lukaku has a "strong desire" to go back to Inter Milan.
Lukaku returned to Chelsea for a club record fee of £97.5 million in August after helping Inter win their first Serie A championship in more than a decade in the 2020–21 season.
The Belgian striker, who was dropped by Thomas Tuchel, has struggled in his debut season back in England, scoring just eight goals in 26 Premier League games.
After scoring 30 goals in all competitions in his final season with the Nerazzurri, Lukaku's reputation in Italy is still high, and the 29-year-old has been heavily linked with a return to San Siro.
The club is interested in getting the striker back, according to Antonello, and the former Manchester United front is eager to make the switch.
Despite rumors that Lukaku would swap loans, Antonello insisted that the finances have to be in order for any transfer to happen.
He stated that the player had a strong desire to come back. "However, it is necessary to examine the technological issues and economic-financial viability.
"Giuseppe Marotta, the president and CEO of Inter, should be consulted about this. By June 30th, [could he join]? We'll make an effort to complete it on schedule.
"The words "competitiveness on the field" and "economic and financial sustainability" must right now be combined. With these claims, will Romelu Lukaku really return to Inter Milan or he will stay at Chelsea for the upcoming season? let's watch out
"We are currently working on this. These two words will always serve as the foundation for all decisions the club makes in the transfer market.
"The new financial fair play regulations will go into effect in 2024–2025 thanks to UEFA. Everything is possible, taking into account financial viability."
