Manchester United set a new Premier League record with their opening day match versus Brighton.
Erik ten Hag, the latest Red Devils manager, will take the helm of Manchester United for the first time against Brighton in the Premier League. After receiving a home matchup versus Brighton for their opening game of the forthcoming season, Manchester United broke a previous Premier League record.
Erik ten Hag, who took over as manager over the summer, will lead the Red Devils into their new era. When his new team hosts the Seagulls on August 7th, the Dutchman will be hoping to get his reign off to the greatest start possible.
When he first enters the Old Trafford dugout for a Premier League game, he will curiously be following a line of United managers. This is due to the fact that the Red Devils will kick off their season at home for the sixth year running.
For the teams that are currently Premier League members, that represents a new record for the highest level and the longest active streak. The last time United began a season on the road was during the 2016–17 campaign, when they travelled to Dean Court to play Bournemouth.
Since then, they've always hosted different teams on the first day, beginning in 2017 with West Ham. Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, and Paul Pogba all scored to help the Red Devils demolish the Hammers 4-0, but none of those players will probably play for Old Trafford in two months.
Pogba scored once more the following season, this time alongside Luke Shaw, as the Red Devils defeated Leicester City 2-1. When Chelsea visited Manchester in 2019, the winning streak that began on the opening day at Old Trafford persisted.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a strong first impression in his first game as permanent manager. Marcus Rashford scored twice, while Anthony Martial and Dan James each scored once as United thrashed Frank Lampard's Blues.
However, when Crystal Palace paid a visit to Old Trafford in September 2020, that winning streak came to an abrupt end. Early goals from Wilfred Zaha and Andros Townsend sealed the visitors' downfall after the former United star's own two goals.
Even though Donny van de Beek scored on his debut, Solskjaer's team was unable to erase Palace's advantage. That was the last time United suffered a season-opening defeat at home, and it was only the third time they had done so overall.
When the Red Devils hosted their fierce rivals Leeds United last season, things started to turn around. With four assists in a 5-1 triumph, Pogba's man-of-the-match performance propelled United to a commanding victory.
Ten Hag will be hoping that Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes can repeat his hat-trick performance against the Seagulls. The Dutchman has previously acknowledged that he is looking forward to beginning his reign.
"After doing some research, I believe that with this beginning, we are currently in the lead of the process. We currently have a few weeks off before the season begins. As a result, I'll do an analysis, make observations, and draw conclusions. However, I now retain it for myself "said he.
"I've dealt with big managers and large clubs from the Premier League before [in European play]. The Premier League is undoubtedly the biggest league in the world, though. I am eager to engage in combat with them."
