Fabio Vieira: Arsenal has agreed to pay Porto £34 million for their midfielder
Fabio Vieira is Arsenal's third signing of the summer, joining from Porto in a £34 million deal. The 22-year-old scored six league goals in 15 starts last season.
Porto have agreed to sell midfielder Fabio Vieira to Arsenal for £34 million plus add-ons.
The 22-year-old Portuguese is Arsenal's third summer signing, following goalkeeper Matt Turner and Brazilian forward Marquinhos. Arsenal will pay £30 million up front, plus £4 million in performance-related bonuses.
Last year, Vieira was named tournament player of the tournament at the European U21 Championship.
Vieira, a highly-rated midfielder who had a league-high 14 assists in the 2021/22 Primera Liga season, will add more creative talent to Arsenal's ranks.
"The club informs the market that it has reached an agreement with Arsenal FC for the permanent signing of Fabio Vieira for the sum of 40 million Euros," Porto said in a statement.
Arsenal has yet to make the announcement, but Vieira is said to have arrived in north London on Thursday for a medical.
Mikel Arteta is expected to continue pushing for more summer signings at Arsenal, with Manchester City's Gabriel Jesus heavily linked to a move to the Emirates Stadium and Leicester's Youri Tielemans also a target.
Last season, Vieira scored six league goals in 15 starts for Porto and has 13 goals in 21 appearances for Portugal U21s. He's 22 years old and technically very gifted, so he's a good fit for Arsenal mould of players. He has great movement, is very graceful on the ball, and is eager to get his hands on it.
He primarily plays as a No. 8; he has also played out wide as a winger or as a false nine, but his best position is in midfield.
A Premier League recruitment scout described him to me as "a lovely footballer, someone great on the eye and would love to have in your side."
This season, he has six goals in 15 starts for Porto and 13 goals in 21 games for Portugal U21s, which tells you everything you need to know about the type of midfielder he is.
