Chelsea have taken the next step in their rebuilding process with the arrival of Thomas Tuchel's first summer acquisition. The Blues have negotiated a deal with Southampton for goalkeeper Eddie Beach, according to football.london.
On the south coast, the 18-year-old made an impression this season, helping the Saints win the Under-18 Premier League South division. Beach made 20 appearances for Southampton's under-18 side in all competitions, conceding 31 goals.
Several clubs were interested in signing the shot-stopper this summer, according to football.london, but Chelsea won the race. Beach's final appearance in the 2021/22 U18 Premier League season came against the west Londoners, when he captained the Saints to a 5-2 victory over Ed Brand's team.
Beach is a Welsh young international, having earned six caps for the Under-19s so far. He's the first player signed as part of Tuchel's intended reconstruction this summer.
"We are rebuilding, not enhancing the squad," the Blues boss told football.london. We are in the process of rebuilding. This is always a challenge for us, but we are up for it.
"I've had no idea where we're at since day one." What I can guarantee is that I will be here – if I can promise that – with full vigor and positive energy regardless of what happens. We'll continue to work for Chelsea, and I'm not going to think about the worst-case situation. On which level we will compete, we will see."
Chelsea, however, is rumored to be close to signing another goalkeeper this summer. According to football.london, the Blues are interested in signing Chicago Fire goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina.
