Liverpool's position on the issue on Mohamed Salah's contract expiration and whether he will 'down tools'
Liverpool have no concerns that Mohamed Salah will let his standards slip when his contract at Anfield expires next season.
The Merseysiders are bracing for the possibility of the brilliant Egyptian forward walking out on the club after refusing to meet his demands for a double-his-money £400,000-a-week deal.
Liverpool have no concerns that Mohamed Salah's standards will slip next season, but they are bracing for the forward to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Senior club sources have confirmed that they have gone as far as they can in negotiations with Salah's camp without upsetting their salary structure. And, after selling Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich in a deal worth up to £35 million to break another contract stalemate, the Reds do not expect the 30-year-old to initiate a compromise now.
However, Anfield believes that Salah is too much of a perfectionist to down tools. After scoring 23 goals last season, the former Chelsea and Roma star shared the Golden Boot with Tottenham forward Son Heung-min and won the FWA Footballer of the Year and PFA Player of the Year double for the second time in five seasons. Despite this, Salah's relationship with manager Jurgen Klopp remains strong, and his behavior during negotiations has been exemplary.
Darwin Nunez has been signed by Liverpool in a deal that could cost £85million.
Klopp's strikeforce has remained effective. They also signed Fulham teenager Fabio Carvalho for £5 million plus add-ons. And Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsey, 18, was having a medical on Saturday before completing a move that will see the Reds pay £4 million plus another £2.5 million in easily achievable bonuses.
Sadio Mane is set to leave Liverpool for Bayern Munich this summer, but Mohamed Salah is expected to remain at Anfield for the upcoming season.
Liverpool has no plans to do any more business in the summer transfer market. They were interested in 22-year-old Aurelien Tchouameni before Real Madrid made it clear that they were willing to meet Monaco's asking price of £86 million, which Liverpool thought was too high.
For the time being, two superstar forwards remain very much part of the collective cause, with Liverpool facing Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday, but serious questions are being raised about how long both will remain at Anfield.
As things stand, they are only committed to terms until the summer of 2023 and have yet to commit to extensions beyond that point, with former Reds goalkeeper James admitting that a change of scenery may appeal to men who have won almost everything in England.
