Minority highlights need for each Ghanaian to get Ghana card

 

The Minority Caucus of Parliament on Friday highlighted the requirement for each Ghanaian to have the National Identification (ID) Card (Ghana Card).

 

Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority Leader, talking on the floor of Parliament, said: "The issue of the National ID Card and, surprisingly, the thought of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, involving it as a reason for enrollment or for the direct of the 2024 (general) political decision, makes it a majority rule basic that each meriting Ghanaian has the National ID Card. Furthermore, any disappointment on their part will toss our majority rules system into danger."

 

The Minority Leader said on regular schedule, he sees lines of elderly people and youngsters right at the entryway of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council in Tamale to apply for the National ID Card.

 

"That public great should be made effectively and progressively accessible to the Ghanaian," Mr Iddrisu expressed.

 

Mr Samuel Nartey George, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo-Prampram/Deputy Ranking Member for Communications, who raised the issue of the Ghana Card on the floor of the House, encouraged the Business Committee of the House to plan a joint gathering for the Ministers of Interior, Communications and Digitalisation and Finance to brief the House on the Ghana Card issue.

 

He repeated that Parliament had oversight obligation regarding the Interior Minister, who manages the National Identification Authority (NIA); the Communications and Digitalisation Minister, who administers the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Finance Minister who had oversight over the Bank of Ghana.

 

He said the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation had given a cutoff time of 30th of June; that is from first of July, they planned to deactivate unregistered portable SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) Cards and that the Bank of Ghana had likewise coordinated that from the first of July, one wouldn't have the option to get to his Bank account without the Ghana Card.

 

He noticed that these state foundations were putting together their orders with respect to Legislative Instrument (LI) 2111, which was passed by the House.

 

"Indeed, even the Electoral Commission is getting ready to raise a Constitutional Instrument (CI), that is to make another citizen register utilizing the Ghana Card," Mr George said.

 

He said some Ghanaians who had enlisted for the Ghana Card in 2018, the NIA couldn't give them their cards; saying "Thus, as agents of the Ghanaian public, what is this House going to do, among now and the 30th of this current month (June) to guarantee that our constituents who had enrolled for the Ghana Card get the Ghana Card, so they wouldn't be disappointed".

 

He said assuming the NIA couldn't give those Cards to Ghanaians, who were willing and prepared to enroll, it was the ideal opportunity for it to be spread the word for the Authority that they shouldn't place their constituents in danger.

 

Mr Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, the MP for South Dayi, said the District Offices of the NIA were sited far away from individuals and that it had become challenging for MPs to move individuals to and from the workplaces for their Ghana Card enrollment.

 

He, thusly, engaged the NIA to move around to contact individuals for the Ghana Card enlistment, which they had done previously.
