At several assemblies, the President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology Ghana, Henry Kwadwo Boateng, has expressed his discontent with the Spatial Planning Department (SPD).

According to him, all wetlands have been rezoned as residential zones for humans, resulting in construction in permitted areas.

His remarks come as the legislatures have yet to implement President Akufo-instruction Addo's to remove unlawful buildings from waterways.

Engr Boateng, in an interview with Adom News, urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to carry out the recent directive to remove any unlawful buildings from waterways.

He expressed disappointment that the MMDAs had failed to implement the president's directive, despite the fact that it has been many weeks.  "It is quite terrible that a full President of the Republic will go down to deliver a directive and the MMDAs will not respect the order," he added, adding that "my few checks have indicated that none of the Assemblies have made any step to execute the order."

He believes that the Ministry of Local Government, Local Government Services, and the Regional Coordinating Council should all work together to ensure that the order is carried out by the MMDAs.

"If any Assembly claims to have gone to these sites to even designate the place for destruction, they should come out and tell us," he challenged.

Engr. Boateng further stated that if the unlawful constructions are not demolished, the Ministry of Works will have a difficult time.

In order to eliminate the flood threat, the Department of Housing and Urban Development will install storm drains.

He also decried Accra's lack of appropriate planning, which has resulted in unlawful building.

"Every MMDCE who has yet to carry out the President's directives shall be slapped with the Whip." "It'll keep them on their toes," he predicted.

He was particularly concerned about certain Ghanaians' indiscriminate dumping of rubbish in storm drains and bodies of water.

"The MMDAs are aware of these persons who have built-in rivers. If you're an engineer, you shouldn't go there. You can't really blame them. That is why the MMDAs should take the initiative and tear down those structures," he said.
