James Agyenim-Boateng, a former Deputy Minister of Information during the late Prof. Atta Mills' dictatorship, has expressed surprise at those defending the National Cathedral's development.
The Project's supporters, he claims, are the same individuals who chastised late President Atta-Mills for praying at the Castle.
The former NDC appointee described the scenario as a "irony of life" in a Facebook post on Saturday, questioning why detractors of the late devout President are now calling for a National Cathedral.
"The same individuals who derided and condemned Prof. Atta Mills for praying excessively as President and accused him of converting the Castle into a church are now claiming to be building a National Cathedral."
They are the same folks who claim to be constructing a National Cathedral for God to dwell in and assist us in overcoming our many difficulties. These same folks argue that a National Cathedral is more important than anything else at this moment. He wrote, "This is the irony of life!"
"We may have to set up a national day of fasting and prayer for the National Cathedral to possibly begin bringing honour and reputation since thus far, it's wrecking havoc on reputations acquired over many years," he said in a previous Facebook post on the National Cathedral.
Agyenim-remarks Boateng's are in line with a number of popular attitudes regarding the National Cathedral's development.
Some opponents argue that the government is wasting money by building a cathedral when there are more pressing challenges like as Accra's recurring floods and arrears owing to NABCO recipients.
As a result, opponents, including the Minority in Parliament, have urged the administration to prioritize education. Meanwhile, Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah, the Executive Director of the National Cathedral project, has denied rumors that one of its Board of Trustees members, Dr. Mensa Otabil, left owing to illegalities.
Dr. Otabil opted out prior to the registration of the members of the Board of Trustees in 2019, he said in a statement on Friday, because "he could not give the project the requisite attention."
He emphasized that the Founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) has not been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2019, due to his refusal to register.
"As a result, Dr. Mensa Otabil did not resign from the Board as claimed, but instead excused himself at the time of the Directors' registration in July, 2019." For the avoidance of doubt, Dr. Otabil has not served on the Board of Trustees since July of this year," according to the statement.
